Small Ways to Help During the Covid-19 Pandemic

The novel coronavirus has impacted more than just global health; it has also impacted financial health. Millions have already lost jobs, and many more people face uncertainty. So, what can you do to help in this time of crisis?

Help can come in many forms. The most obvious is a donation of money, but there are many other ways to help that are just as beneficial. People are in need in nearly every facet of life, from mental health to paying rent, and that provides ample opportunity for you to find a way to ease someone’s burden.

Apart from the concept of how to help is the question of where to help. Consider whether you want your efforts to be placed locally, nationally, or globally. That can help you focus in on what you would like to offer and to whom.

Here is a brief list of ideas to consider. It is by no means comprehensive, but hopefully it will get you started on thinking in unconventional ways in terms of helping during this unprecedented time.

  • Donate your stimulus check if you don’t need it.
  • Pay extra on your utility bill toward a low-income family.
  • Continue paying your maid service even if they can’t clean for you now.
  • Donate your credit card reward points or miles.
  • Donate blood or plasma.
  • Lend a laptop or device to a family for distance learning.
  • Offer to grocery shop for an elderly person.
  • Check in on people who live alone.
  • Make a medical worker a homemade meal.
  • Buy a gift card from a local business.
  • Donate vacation hours at work to a colleague in need.
  • Foster a pet.
  • Donate clothing and household items you don’t need.
  • Donate food to a shelter.
  • Order from a local restaurant.
  • Donate a skill by offering pro bono work.
  • Donate money to a credible charity.
  • Offer to tutor students virtually.

This is just the beginning of how you can help. From here, consider brainstorming with other family or community members about specific needs near you. Employ social media platforms for discovering who needs help or for offering your services.
